A testimony to the trials of black womanhood
This is a truly inspiring book for all of those black women who have ever felt like life is just too much! Emecheta tells of her struggles and triumphs to find a new identity in London after leaving her homeland of Nigeria. She becomes a single parent raising five children and trying to pursue her dreams of becoming a writer inbetween various jobs and studying. The sense of diplacemnent and otherness that all black people feel in a land that is not their own is particularly vivid. She states in the opening of her book, " And if for any reason you do not believe in miracles, please start belieivng..." I am so grateful for this testimony to black womanhood and for the talent of Ms. Emecheta.
if you want to draw strength from a strong woman
Emecheta provides an insight into how she dealt with challenges in her life, from her broken marriage, to raising five children while working and coping with her studies. She also traces her journey of becoming a writer. This book provided me with hope, strength and inspriation and should be read by by those seeking out a life role model. Nice material for students, too.
Inspirational
This woman is my heroine! She is so strong and yet so down to earth and still a mother through and through as this book shows us, with its snippets on buying plums for her kids on a day out to the zoo, and how she juggled studying, working and writing books and yet still be home on their return from school!
I would love to read more recent stuff from her, I heard recently however that 2 of her daughters died which really saddened me as after reading this book, I really felt I knew her family well.
