An excellent look at life in the typical Caribbean suburb5
This is my favourite book of all time! It gives a wonderful insight into life in a typical caribbean suburb. The characters are so rich they come to life and you can compare them to persons living on your street, in your neighbourhood. The book has a timeless quality which appeals to both adults and children. Although Miguel Street can be described as a collection of short stories, they all come together to give a glimpse of life in Miguel Street. Man-Man, Laura and all the other characters made me cry, laugh and empathsise with their situations. It is my favourite book by Mr.Naipaul, and I have never been able to keep a copy. I've bought the book at least five times, and I always end up loaning it to someone who enjoys it so much they don't give it back! I recommend it for anyone who wants a Caribbean experience without having to move there!

Utter brilliance5
I first read this book ten years ago, and return to it frequently for the sheer pleasure of reading it again. It is delightful in it's simplicity, small dramas writ large against a colourful island landscape. It is an engaging masterpiece, full of rich and diverse characters and brilliantly funny, by far my favourite Naipaul and one of the best novels I have ever read. Someone somewhere must be working on the film script of it.

Trinidadians aren't all that illiterate4
This was an excellent book! It expreesed the lives of the men of northern Trinidad. It was hilarious yet there was a deeper meaning that most people didn't get after reading the book. My favourite character was Hat, simply because he was greatly liked by everyone on Migel Street and he gave the best advice. What i didn't lie though is that the author made Trinidadians out to be carefree people who always 'limed' and never had education in mind. This was a great literature book, though, and deserved the Nobel Prize it got. Way to go Sir Naipaul! you've done us Trinidadians proud!
