innocent
The years further on in the series are better, but it gives some hints as to Eric's life before becoming an author (of what exists since he destroyed his early works). Little remains of the stuff biographers like (they are also guessing), but some of the journalism is worth the read even today. Not as satisfying as 1937-1941 books but the school letters to his mother and the patriotic peoms are here. If your going to read it is a good place to start.
