BRILLIANT 5
This is a 'must have' book for anyone working in EYFS and will be useful whether you have years of experience or are wanting guidance to support a child with ASD for the first time. Everyone I've shown it to has had a quick look and spotted something they want to use - it's SO practical and helpful. It is ideal for teachers and teaching assistants to use together to quickly focus in on the key knowledge and understanding needed to help a child settle in, reduce anxiety and promote learning. There is enough explanation to understand the main difficulties and differences you need to be aware of for children with ASD - but very readable, positive, optimistic and reassuring. SENCOs and EPs will find it invaluable. Unlike most books on ASD, this is written for real UK EY settings and it really does promote inclusive practice- you can instantly use it in your planning. There are very clear and useful checklists to guide observation and quickly help you assess the child's strengths and difficulties. These are clearly linked to ELG so you can easily generate on IEP and map directly to your planing and monitoring. These, in turn, are linked to attractively presented play plans that give easy, very do-able, positive ideas for what you can do to help - for example in building communication skills or promoting play. The play plans are really helpful for teaching assistants as they are so adaptable and encourage you to generate your own ideas. They also build confidence as you are likely to see things you are already doing.
