Being hard is what Jack Slade s all about. He has no time for weaklings, especially not on his team. He s captain, and his new coach has helped him realize that anything that interferes with his game is not worth his time. Gem doesn t see it that way, though. She fancies Jack like mad, but she doesn t want to be second bestand neither does her best friend, Christian, who thinks Jack is just a meathead. Gem knows there s more to Jack, but she doesn t know if that s enough to keep them together...

Some school librarians will hate it but...
...Kate Cann tells it as it is. This is a real book for real teenagers, capturing that intensity of a first meaningful sexual relationship and the pitfalls that come with it. Cann is brilliant at getting the male and female psyches right; macho Jack's confusion at being torn between the demands of being one of the lads and retaining Gemma's interest is so believable. Gemma's hurt at feeling second-best to the team as she constantly has to fight to retain her individuality and not be seen as just another rugby groupie. Both of them scared of the depth of feelings they have for each other.
Leader of the pack- review-
This book, is really good, it shows how easy it for something an innocent as a game of rugby to get out of hand, how one person can change a persons life and make them someone their not.
This book offers you everything you need for a good read, it has a good story line, the couple you so want to get together and make their romance work, and you have the characters you just hate. All in all this book is awsome! Do take notice of the warning on the front cover though, it does contain a lot of swearing, a lot of sex and equally as much rugby!
If you love Kate Cann's books as much as I do then you'll love this one, its different to her other books, but that isn't a bad thing at all, she does a fab job to describe how a rugby team gets made very tribal by a man who doesn't care about himself let alone the team he's leading, the only thing that matters is winning.
Well worth the read!
Just don't get put off by the cover!
Jack's not interested in girls. At least not girlfriends. He's into rugby. His life is rugby.
Gem likes a challenge. And she also likes Jack. So when Gem's friend Chris introduces them at school and there's an instant spark of static, Gem can't wait to break into Jack's heart.
But will Gem be able to sparkle enough to crack Jack's manly defences and win his heart, or will she simply become another jewel in the crown of being a rugby team captain? Jack must chose between loyalty or love.
A pink cover and rugby as the main subject of the blurb; it just doesn't make sense! But let me tell you, this book does make sense. From the very start of the book, Kate Cann absorbs the reader into the raw emotions of the teenage characters, creating a pulse-pounding novel that clutches at the senses. And, unlike most teenage novels, Cann manages to perfectly portray the passions of both teenage sexes, making this story perfect for all young adults. As long as boys will read a book with a pink cover!
