A commpelling narrative which is IMPOSSIBLE to put down!
I bought this book because I had seen the TV production, and read the book "A Band OF Brothers" by Steven E. Ambrose. ( Featuring the same Regiment in which Burgett served.) I wanted to read more about the subject...
I was pleasantly surprised to find Burgett's style even more compelling than that of Ambrose.
It always helps (in my mind at least) if a story is told in the 1st person.
Burgett's experiences are truly extraordinary, and the scenes come one after another. It is relentless! Reading the book gave me a sense of the sheer speed and ferocity of events which a trooper had to endure. His style is simple and all the better for it. It really is as if he is re-telling his personal story to the reader almost on a one - to - one basis.
I wish that Spielberg would now make a movie or TV drama of Burgett's story -Now that would be something!
War is scary!
Stonking read. Written in a breathtaking, passionate way leaving the reader gasping for breath at the horror of war. I have now read all of Mr Burgetts books currently available on Amazon and would recommend them all to you, but I just ask you to remember that you are reading about real horror, real war and that Mr Burgett and so many others gave so much so that we can read about this rather than live it.
A fine account of Operation Market Garden US airborne forces
A good first-hand read from a US paratroopers perspective, that I very much enjoyed. Nicely detailed, following on from the previous book. He's not impressed with Monty, though!
