Hmmm............"Should I BUY or NOT to buy?"
This book is a quick reference guide for pharmacists in aspects of clinical pharmacy. It appears to copy the style of the highly used Oxford handbook series for doctors.
WHEN IT CAN BE BEST USEFUL:
This book has a predominant need when working in the hospital setting. This quick reference guide can be used when needing information either in response to a problem or questions from other health professionals. Students can find this book useful on hospital visits and summer placements.
THE CONTENT - the useful and not so useful aspects:
The guide could have been better designed to include more appropriate areas for quick reference. Some of the content seeming a bit 'out-of-place' (and 'textbook-ish') includes the section on 'Policy'.
Useful areas include the "Monitoring" section, where advise is given on monitoring patients with renal and hepatic disease and the "Reference" section covers medical abbreviations, details on intravenous drug administration, and laboratory tests.
CONCLUSION:
I feel the guide could have been better designed with more relevant information for the ward and clinical settings. Although some areas seemed out of place for a pocketguide, the book is very useful overall. There is an excellent section on drug side-effects - which is highly useful in the hospital setting.
An overall excellent investment for Hospital Pharmacists!
(This book will be a disappointing investment for community pharmacists and those not interested in advancing into the clinical areas of Pharmacy).
Not a patient focussed handbook.
If you are expecting something along the lines of the yellow handbook of clinical medicine, but for pharmacists, then think again. Contains some useful information, regarding pharmacokinetics equations, has masses of info on adverse reactions, and some useful tables on anti-biotic sensitivites. A survival guide it is not, but a usefull reference if you know exactly what your looking for. Not guaranteed to be in there though.
