as good as it gets
This book covers the whole field of paediatrics on 304 pages. Of course it will never give the same amount of paediatrics as a textbook, but one cannot expect that. Still, this book goes through commonly asked questions and their answers. The chapters about common paediatric problems (such as UTI's and DKA) teach you everything you need to know, as it provides you with a nice overview of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. The chapters about basic science, emergency paediatrics and metabolic illnesses left me with a feeling that I really needed to review these subjects a lot more thouroughly. Although the answers give a lot of information, but only knowing what this book says would make me feel as if I were bluffing my way through the MRCPCH exam. Especially since the book is written in conversation style, and it has the candidate say things like "in my experience.." and " I always handle the problem like this..", even in chapters that deal with unusual problems. This book is probably the best of its kind. Chapters are short and can be read in a few minutes. Great to carry around with you and read when it's quite on the ward.
