Woodhead and Wicker's new text will be the foremost reference source for all perioperative practitioners. This new text is unique in its approach to focus on the principles of perioperative care in a wide variety of different surgical environments. Surgery for patients has changed dramatically over the last few years and a text such as this is needed for students and practitioners in this specialised environment. The content mirrors the dynamics of modern perioperative practice by focusing on surgical interventions in all the environments in which it is currently practised, including A&E departments, general practice clinics, intensive care units, and at the site of serious accidents.

Fantastic Book
This is an excellent book which I would highly reccomend for anybody interested in looking after their patients. Great Chapters! Well done chaps!
An ideal, informative and detailed textbook.
Frankly it 'does what the title says'.
This book holds 4 sections: core principles of perioperative practice, principles of clinical practice, principles of care in different environments and principles of care for specific patient groups.
The first section discusses aspects such as accountability, ethics, risk, infection control and quality with each chapter sub-categorised into more bite sized pieces of information detailing further chapter contents which enables you to further dissect the information efficiently. Many case studies are scattered also to further support learning.
Section two discusses the assessment of the patient and how to care for the patient pre, peri and post-op from pre-assessment questionnaires to anaesthesia, transferring the patient and post op considerations.
The third section covers off how to consider effective care in a multitude of variable environments from day surgery, community, emergency - each chapter discusses key aspects such as dealing with complex clinical, ethical and moral dilemmas within a non-acute locality.
The final section discusses specific patient groups such as paediatrics, obstetrics, elderly, immunocompromised and mental health to name but a few.
I like the fact this book is incredibly informative by giving short, sharp pieces of information. It covers an awfully large topic base for a relatively concise text (i.e 400 pages). As a textbook this does not disappoint and is ideal as a reference point.
