I should have know better
I REALLY should have known better. Been on this planet long enough to have worked out that a book with characters named Phury, Torhment, Rhage, Zadist etc would be a little short on substance. The storyline is weak, the characters, even the human ones, are totally unbelievable, the dialogue goes from cheesy to toe-curlingly awful, even the sex is ridiculous. Mills and Boon type drivel. I can't imagine why anyone would read more than one of these. This goes in the next charity sack.
BRILLIANT, SUPERB, SPELL BINDING
I am always on the look out for a good new author and when amazon recommended this book I decided to try it. And I am so glad I did! (Little tip - buy the second book at the same time)
These books are written exceedingly well, the plots are exciting, breathtaking and nervewracking (don't make any plans to do anything else until you have finished the book!!!), the characters well drawn, with many flaws but likeable, both guys and gals, mortals and otherwise and the baddies are mean but not too smart.
This first book in the series gives the reader a good background on who the brotherhood is, what and whom they fight, whom they love, starting with Wrath, their reluctant leader. The descriptions of the characters are so vivid, they jump of the page and one immediately feels a bond with them.
I am often astonished at the versatility of the Vampire novel writer and Ward has a great imagination. I read this book in one sitting (albeit until 3 am in the morning) and can't wait to get my hands on the next installment. I feel the urgent need to find out what happens next and for an author that must be the highest compliment.
I won't get into the story line, check it out for yourself and let me know if you think I have exaggerated. These books are keepers and you will read them again and again.
A disappointing read of mediocre quality
I'm quite new to the paranormal, urban fantasy universe, Dark Lover was one of the first vampire novels I have read. I picked it up because there were great reviews about it, well didn't like it too much.
All through the 400 or so pages I couldn't get used to the names (Wrath, Phury, Rhage, Zsadist..) they made me giggle (at the most inappropriate times, when they were described as so fearless and scary warriors, but the names just ruined it..) and roll my eyes, and though I like my books to be funny and witty, these speaking names just seemed so forced and ridiculous. And the vilain is called Mr. X .. *rolls eye*
Though it is a page turner: it is fast paced, packed with action and steamy sex scenes, I don't think either the story or the writing style is that good. I seriously doubt I'll read more of this series, there are other much better paranormal novels, you'd better try Bitten by Kelley Armstrong, that is a brilliant book. The writing style and quality are amazing, not only the writing style is fantastic, but it is funny, bitingly sarcastic at times, and the heroine is a great one. Try Bitten, I'm sure it'll entrance you as much as it captivated me!
