"A well written and comprehensive journey into M&A...an essential reference for any M&A practitioner...this isn′t just a book about great thoughts and process, but rather how to turn insight into deals, and deals into lasting value."
–From the Foreword by Joseph R. Perella
Chairman, Institutional Securities and Investment Banking Group, Morgan Stanley
"Bob Bruner′s Applied Mergers and Acquisitions is a masterful and comprehensive treatment of the topic of M&A. The book is remarkably complete, discussing economic valuation, legal considerations, deal structure, ethics, accounting, post–merger integration–and more. It blends material from practice and from academia in an easy–to–read style, making it a must–read, and want–to–read, for anyone interested in this subject."
–Peter Tufano
Sylvan C. Coleman Professor of Financial Management, Harvard Business School
"How many books really succeed in teaching M&A practitioners to distinguish among deals that should be avoided, deals that are promising but can′t be executed by the teams involved, and deals where significant value can be achieved? We should start the count with Bruner′s Applied Mergers and Acquisitions. Bruner is the ultimate teacher for practitioners who want to improve performance."
–Edward A. Snyder
Dean and George Pratt Shultz Professor of Economics, University of Chicago Graduate School of Business
"Bob Bruner has achieved the impossible: covering in one book all relevant economic, financial, accounting, legal, and tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions and illustrating each concept with case studies. Impressive!"
–Theo Vermaelen
Professor of Finance, INSEAD
"Bob Bruner′s book combines the best of academic thinking and business practice on one of the most fascinating and challenging topics in all of business. The area of mergers and acquisitions stretches executives and scholars to consider the whole realm of management practice–from strategy, to finance, to law, to negotiations, to integration planning, to human behavior."
–Robert S. Harris
Dean, Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Virginia

the modern day M&A bible
I bought the hardback version with the cd - well worth the extra cost.
The book of 1000 pages goes into much more detail than others I've got. The references and section notes are invaluable.
The book is well laid out, with plenty of cases, the financial side is well explained, particularly the corporate financial angle, and stock price.
The cd has worked examples in Excel, very useful, and exam type questions, with answers elsewhere. Beware of other books with cd's - others I used had very few useable examples.
It lacks the programme planning perspective which if it had been included would have made the score higher.
Of all the books I researched, this was the most comprehensive and most liked.
The author is source of other works, which are referenced and if followed through, makes the author a bit of a guru.
Modern Day M&A bible
I acquired a number of works before I came across this works.
Different versions available, the full text version (1000+ pages with cd) is most valuable even at the price.
Brunner must surely be the worlds current best author on the subject, and the work has countless sections and subsections all individually referenced which is the acid test that the author is not just reviewing others works but taking the subject seriously.
The cd has numerous examples of accounting formula.
I bought the book new with the hope of selling it off after I had finished my research but I found it impossible to part with, it encouraged me to take the subject further.
Comprehensive M&A reference
getAbstract suspects that this comprehensive text by Robert F. Bruner, one of the leading academic authorities on mergers and acquisitions (M&A), will prove nearly indispensable to any student or executive seeking a thorough introduction to the subject. Much of what has been written about M&A reflects a bias toward or against deals, oversimplifies, ignores important facts or promotes the business of an advisory firm. Bruner, however, addresses M&A with both scholarly objectivity and an appreciation for practical realities. His discussion of whether M&A deals on the whole create or destroy value raises points that seem to have eluded the attention of many economists. At the same time, he is quite aware of the limits of economic analysis, and gives appropriate emphasis to psychological and behavioral dimensions.
