Product Description

Many foot problems in diabetes can be prevented and often the patients are misdiagnosed, or inappropriately referred or treated. This title will be of immense use to the audience as work of reference.

Diabetes mellitus is the lack of insulin leading to uncontrolled carbohydrate metabolism, the breakdown of starches and sugars into smaller units that can be used by the body for energy. Foot ulcers occur in about 15% of diabetic patients in their lifetime and hospital admissions due to foot ulcers are very common. Foot problems mostly occur when there is nerve damage in the feet or when there is poor blood flow.
∗ Contains colour photos and pictures
∗ Examples for identification of the patients at risk for foot ulceration
∗ Prompt diagnosis and treatment.

From the Back Cover
Foot ulcers occur in about 15% of diabetic patients in their lifetime, with a major impact on their quality of life. Many hospital admissions related to diabetes are due to foot ulcers, which can result in prolonged hospital stay and increased morbidity and mortality. A very large number of lower–extremity amputations are performed every year on patients with diabetes (80,000 at least in the USA). Most diabetes–related foot problems can be prevented or their severity reduced by early detection and treatment. This book should contribute to improved foot care through raised awareness of symptoms amongst healthcare professionals.

This comprehensive atlas provides:
∗ 250 colour photographs, graphs and imaging studies
∗ Educational examples taken from genuine case reports
∗ A reference guide for identifying patients at risk of foot ulceration
∗ Illustration of common problems such as neuropathic and neuroischaemic ulcers, ischaemia and infections

This book will be of interest to diabetologists, endocrinologists, podiatrists, specialist nurses and orthopaedics specialising in foot problems.

Customer Reviews

essential reading for foot health practitioners5
I bought this as one of the recommended reading books for my online course and have really appreciated the details given concerning this subject. The pictures are certainly a deterrant to anyone thinking they might be careless with managing their diabetes! The many case studies and careful descriptions give plenty of help with examinations, diagnoses and treatment. It is essentially a book for those involved in offering treatment and is quite expensive to buy. However, my copy was printed in India and therefore was significantly cheaper but still very good quality with a good hardcover binding, clear printing and photos. It also arrived amazingly quickly.
