The psycho–social needs of victims of rape and sexual assault are increasingly recognised and there is a need for a critical synthesis of knowledge and practice to support the development of training and best practice in the mental health and sexual health professions.
The Trauma of Sexual Assault provides an understanding of the theoretical underpinning of the wide range of clinical problems that can follow sexual assault. Focusing on adult victims of sexual assault, this book brings together research findings, theoretical perspectives and implications for treatment, longer term management, and future policy.

Comprehensive coverage of up to date approaches
This is a book, though it appears as part of a series of clinical psychology, would be a useful read for gps, nurses, counsellers and psychiatrists too. The manner is clear and concise with chapter titles such as "Rape; History, Myths and Reality" putting sexual assault into a socio-historical context. There is also an informative section on the psychological assesment of sexual assualt and treatment approaches for post tramatic stress disorder that have been especially useful. One other section which I was glad to see covered is that of the impact of sexual assualt on health care workers. It is also a book that refers to male assault survivors and their specific adaptations to the trauma. It is very matter of fact in its tone and lacks some warmth but perhaps this distance is necessary in order to address comprehensively a topic as devasting as sexual assualt.
