Product Description

Fundamental to all areas of mathematics, algebra provides the cornerstone for the student′s development. The concepts are often intuitive, but some can take years of study to fully absorb. For over twenty years, the author′s classic three–volume set, Algebra, has been regarded by many as the most outstanding introductory work available. This work, Classic Algebra, combines a fully updated Volume 1 with the essential topics from Volumes 2 and 3, and provides a self–contained introduction to the subject.

In addition to the basic concepts, advanced materials is introduced, giving the reader an insight into more advanced algebraic topics. The clear presentation style gives this book the edge over others on the subject.

Undergraduates studying first courses in algebra will benefit from the clear exposition and perfect balance of theory, examples and exercises. The book provides a good basis for those studying more advanced algebra courses.

Customer Reviews

Outstanding-the best intro to abstract algebra5
This book is, as other reviewers have said, the best undergrad intro to abstract algebra on the market. There are few other books which cover most of the undergrad curriculum in this depth in one volume. This book is almost alone in its clear treatment of the group isomorphism theorems. Most of the textbooks you will find in the bookshops either assume ,ignore, or skim over these vitaltheorems. The statement and proof of the analogues for rings are straightforward after they have been proved for groups, as this book points out. There are very few volumes which cover the undergrad algebra curriculum as comprehensively as this book-I can only think of Cameron's 'Introduction to Algebra',which is not quite as comprehensive as this volume by Cohn.Do try to get this book as a hardback,as it will last you a lifetime.Outstanding.

Good for sharp minds4
This book has a very direct approach that will suit disciplined students of maths who are comfortable with mathematical definitions. It covers ground quickly, and offers an impressive number of exercises throughout each chapter, with solutions given at the back of the book.

However, it doesn't offer much in the way of examples or illustration of principles, so may leave less gifted pupils (such as myself) re-reading some sections several times to burn the concepts into their mind.

But for students who are prepared to put the effort in to gain a thorough understanding of the topics covered, this is an excellent volume.
