Basic Mathematics for Chemists aims to teach the maths that chemists need to know through the use of applications, data, examples and problems all drawn from chemistry. The author demystifies the maths, and shows how, where and why it is used in chemistry. The text assumes little prior knowledge of maths and starts from basic mathematical principles, including understanding equations, notation, basic functions and their priorities. It then covers more specialised functions such as logarithms and trigonometric functions before presenting chapters on calculus. In this edition, there is a new chapter on vectors and matrices.

From the Back Cover
Basic Mathematics for Chemists, Second Edition is an introductory textbook aimed at students in the chemical sciences. Written by a chemist for chemists, this textbook demystifies the mathematics that chemists need to know and shows how, where and why it is used in practice. Through many examples, problems and applications, this book guides the reader from basic mathematical principles to complex numbers, vectors, determinants and matrices. The philosophy of the second edition remains the same as the first, to introduce basic concepts in the context of the chemistry in which they are used. Basic Mathematics for Chemists, Second Edition features:
∗ A carefully structured text, assuming little prior knowledge of mathematics.
∗ A clear and direct approach leading chemists through the mathematics they need to know.
∗ Many examples, problems and applications relating the mathematics to real–world chemistry.
∗ New and expanded coverage of complex numbers, vectors, determinants and matrices.

Easily understood mathematical explainations
The book explains mathematical concepts in plain english and so did not confuse me even more about mathematics. In helping me to understand more about mathematical concepts it proved invaluable in my course work.
Waste of Money
I bought this book on a recommendation from our course tutor and, although quite expensive, I thought it would be worth it. Well, I am totally disappointed with the content - it explains permutations but not combinations. What an odd thing to omit, they practically go hand in hand! Not impressed at all and am going to buy Maths for Chemistry by Monk instead. We'll see if that's any better...it's certainly cheaper!!!
