Product Description

Today classic English style and tailoring enjoys worldwide adulation, and rightly so. Here, Jeremy Hackett, founder of the eponymous gentlemenâs outfitters and columnist for the Independent on Sunday, takes us on a Grand Tour of an appealing world of Bentleys and polo, bicycles and picnics, bow ties and Sussex Spaniels, top hats and bespoke luggage. Brimming with photographs, anecdotes and observations as sharp as his suits â as well as more than a glancing nostalgia for an age when a chap really knew how to dress â this is a book for those who know how to appreciate the finer things in life, and for would-be dandies everywhere.

Customer Reviews

Expensive Catalogue, which should be free1
This is a very hard review to write as there is essentially nothing to write about - the book is a terrible disappointment and in fact one wonders how the author managed to get away with it!?
In short, this is not a guide on clothing nor it is a guide on style. What one is getting is an expensive advert of Hackett clothing - essentially their clothes catalogue. It is a nicely made photo album akin to any other clothes catalogue, except that one has to pay for it. 136 illustrations, half of them are photographs of British seaside and people hunting. Not a word on style apart from a few pages of pretentious (but lacking any real Class) ramble about what the author likes, not necessarily related to clothes or style, more like fables from the author's life.
If one is expecting any advice or style suggestion such as what to where and when, then it has to be found elsewhere. In fact I would instead recommend "Gentleman" by Berhnard Roetzel.
A great disappointment as the book was written by an Englishman and I had great expectations for it.
However, if one likes nice photographs, then perhaps this book could be of some interest, although I do not understand why we should pay for it!

Great style book5
Jeremey Hackett founded the men's clothing company Hackett, which has played the most prominent role in the revival of traditional Enlglish style in the UK and abroad. This book is as classy as his clothes, a fascinating book that all men with an interest in style should have.

Whimsical and Entertaining5
Hackett's book is based around a series of short articles or chapters on different subjects related to gentlemen's dress, accoutrements and life-style. Each chapter or article is of limited length (rarely more than a page in length) and I am guesssing are extracted from Hackett's 'Mr Classic' column in the Independent. Each subject is dealt with in a fairly whimsical and light-hearted way.

This is not a po-faced style manual (nor, as has been suggested by one reviewer, a Hackett catalogue - often Hackett ends up singing the praises of other brands and makers). Really, it is a series of triggers to set you thinking about different subjects related to attire and life-style.

The photography is uniformly excellent and illustrates each subject, usually with one or two inspirational art-photography type images (sometimes nothing to do with clothes) as well as one or more images of Hackett's line of clothes illustrating the point (although often it's impossible to tell if they are actually Hackett clothes or not). Hackett does not try to hide his love for traditional (and largely British) attire, but hey, it's a book by Hackett, so what do you expect?

It's a quick and pretty light read, but there is more than enough here to start you thinking about an aspect of your attire that you may have long overlooked. Recommended. Mr Classic: Jeremy Hackett
