Product Description

Peter Brook is regarded as one of the most important and influential directors today. In this fascinating study, Albert Hunt and Geoffrey Reeves chronicle Brook’s development beginning with his earliest productions and concluding with some of his most recent and innovative work. The authors trace the director’s work from the Birmingham Repertory Theatre to the Royal Shakespeare Company, the establishment of his own company and theatre at the Bouffes du Nord in Paris, and the creation of his unique theatrical style. Reeves and Hunt also focus on Brook outside the theatre including the film version of Mahabharata and his work for the opera house. The book will be of interest to theatre practitioners, students and scholars as well as to the general reader. It includes a chronology of Brook’s theatre career and is illustrated with photographs from key productions.

‘The most complete account so far ... expert illuminating commentary as well as a detailed record of the work itself.’ Michael Coveney, The Observer

Customer Reviews

Ideal for those studying legendary theatre director Peter Brook5
The book reads like a companion to Peter Brook, like a detailed biography of his theatrical life. The book explores over 15 different Brook productions in detail, including photographs and interviews with cast and the production team. The original reviews of the productions are often provided as well, both bad and good. It also includes a chronology of Brooks work, and the introduction is extremely helpful in giving a general and broad scope of the directors aims and ideas. One of the key strengths of the book is that not only does it outline the productions in detail, to give you an idea of the main techniques Brook likes to employ and the character of his finished performances, but that it also outlines the developing processes of the plays and many of the rehearsal techniques used to develop the actors. This allows you greater insight into Brook's working mind and what he is ultimatley trying to achieve through his theatre. It is especially helpful for students as it provides a wealth of examples to take into an exam or class to illustrate your points/Brooks methods and, consequently, strength your approach. Hunt and Reeves do justice to each piece and write in a style which does not, unlike some non-fiction texts, bore or alienate the reader. Compelling and ideal for students studying Peter Brook, this book helped me pass my A level with flying colours!
