Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, was the first Englishwoman to publish a large body of literary and philosophical work in her own lifetime.

Susan James is Professor of Philosophy at Birkbeck College, London. Her publications include Passion and Action: The Emotions in Early Modern Philosophy (Oxford, 1997) and numerous articles.
