Widely acclaimed as the most authoritative and accessible one-volume dictionary available in English (and now with translations into Chinese, Korean, Russian, Italian, and Spanish underway) this second edition offers an even richer, more comprehensive, and more up-to-date survey of ideas and thinkers written by an international team of 436 contributors. Includes the most comprehensive entries on major philosophers, 400 new entries including over 50 on preeminent contemporary philosophers, extensive coverage of rapidly developing fields such as the philosophy of mind and applied ethics, more entries on non-Western philosophy than any comparable volume, and increased coverage of Continental philosophy.

The mother of philosophical dictionaries
As an advanced level philosophy student i have found this dictionary not only to be all encompassing but also to explain with the simplicity required of writers in philosophy. The book covers an immense spectrum of philosophical perspectives and does not require a Ph.D to understand. All praise be to Robert Audi and the compilers.
An encyclopedia not a dictionary
I bought this weighty tome to assist my adventures into the mysteries of philosophy but have been frustrated by the frequent cross-referencing of needed words. This is especially irritating when the cross reference is to a lengthy entry that requires protracted and careful reading to find the meaning being sought. As a dictionary I find it a disappointing. When more detail and background is needed the entries can be very helpful so as a one volume encyclopedia yes, but dictionary no.
Comprehensive and usefull.
A very impressive tome that handells every thing most people could want to know. vwery easy to use as it literlly is a dictionary. best as a reference tool in combination with more area specific text books
