Average customer review:Product Description
Field Flora of the British Isles provides a portable, comprehensive guide for those wishing to identify plants growing in the wild in the British Isles. Based on the author’s now standard work, New Flora of the British Isles (2nd edition, 1997), this abridged version offers the same complete coverage and user-friendly features in a compact format that is particularly suitable for use in the field. The reduction in the length of the book has been achieved by omitting the separate descriptions and many of the illustrations, while leaving the determination keys intact. Additional information on growth habit, habitat and distribution is provided as each taxon is identified. Where appropriate, information has been updated, but no taxonomic changes or extra taxa have been incorporated. Twenty-seven pages of essential illustrations are included to aid the user, together with a comprehensive glossary and a concise index.

Editorial Reviews
Review
‘Learn how to use this and you’ll learn a lot of botany.’ The Darlington and Stockton Times
‘ … a splendidly sound basis, summarizing all that has gone before, for the study of British and Irish plants as we enter the new millennium.’ John Akeroyd, Plant Talk
‘I am delighted to have such a wealth of information condensed into such a neat little book, which is an excellent companion for field-work in Britain and Ireland.’ D. R. McKean, Edinburgh Journal of Botany
Altogether this flora closes a gap and allows the botanist as well as the plant lover a quick and reliable orientation in the terrain. The price seems reasonable so that this flora can be warmly recommended. Norbert Leist, Journal of Plant Physiology

Excellent field flora
One of the problems with field floras is the number of species they leave out. When I read that this book, which fits fairly easily into a pocket, contains all the species listed in his New Flora of the British Isles, I was very sceptical. How Stace has managed to do it I still don't quite know, but he has. It contains all the keys and many of the illustrations found in the larger work but omits the descriptions. In many ways I find it easier to use than the larger work, it is certainly easier to carry around. As with the full Flora, a fair bit of experience is needed before the flora is of much use and it definately helps if one has a rough idea of the identity of the plant. As with the full flora no flowering times are indicated which I find annoying but in this case I can understand why. Definately a book for the serious professional or amateur field botanist and which I am rarely without.
Review of Stace's Flora
I require a reference book of all the scientific names of the plants that occur in the British Isles, and Stace's book (and it's sister book, the New flora of the BIs, are recognised as the definitive books on the classification of the British flora. The book has got everything I wanted, and is easy to find your way around.
