Customer Reviews

Very readable and fascinating book4
The title says it all! This is a fascinating and in depth history of the king of instruments, and it sticks strictly to developments in Britain; only crossing the channel to France and Germany where necessary to follow up a development. Well structured chronologically with lots of contemporary photographs and facts - how many people know that the organ of St. Pauls Cathedral has some Wurlitzer pipes!. Recent developments up to the 1990s are covered and Mr. Bicknell gives a detailed but objective view - leaving the reader to form his/her own opinion on whether the 'English' organ has a future. The only shortcoming I found was the assumption that the reader is familiar with 'organ language'.
