Product Description

This user-friendly second edition provides a fully up-dated and practical introduction to gynaecological ultrasound. It describes and explains background anatomy and physiology, instrumentation and how to make the best use of equipment. Emphasis is placed on how to maximise image quality, and how to recognise normal and pathological features. The volume also assesses other relevant diagnostic techniques and various management strategies, and evaluates the role of ultrasound as part of patient management. It includes chapters on pathology of the uterus, ovaries and adnexae, paediatric and trauma cases, together with management of infertility and other gynaecological perspectives of patient management. Illustrated throughout with numerous high-quality ultrasound images and line drawings, many of them new for this latest edition, this is essential reading for practitioners in training, including radiologists, gynaecologists and sonographers.

'This book is well organized and succinct, and it flows remarkably well. … The authors have clearly fulfilled their goal of creating an updated, succinct, and easy-to-read reference text. This book would be of value to radiologists, gynecologists, their respective residents, and US technologists alike. I highly recommend the second edition of Practical Gynaecological Ultrasound.' Practical Gynaecological Ultrasound,
2nd ed
Edited by Jane Bates
New York, NY: Cambridge University
Press, 2006. ISBN 0-521-67450-6.
Softcover, $70.00; pp 166.
In the second edition of Practical
Gynaecological Ultrasound, editor
Jane Bates produces an up-to-date,
pragmatic, and user-friendly overview
of gynecologic ultrasonography (US).
The intended audience appears to be
both radiologists and gynecologists.
The book's nine chapters cover a
wide spectrum of gynecologic US imaging.
The first two chapters deal with
proper choice and use of US equipment.
The third chapter discusses
anatomy, physiology, and normal US
appearance of the female pelvis, along
with relevant normal variants. Additional
chapters cover pathologic conditions
of the uterus, cervix, vagina,
ovaries, fallopian tubes, and adnexal
region. A dedicated chapter, "Ultrasound
in the Acute Pelvis," covers
both emergent gynecologic topics (eg,
ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory
disease, hydrosalpinx) and nongynecologic
pelvic inflammatory conditions
(eg, appendicitis, colitis, diverticulitis),
which can be evaluated, to
varying degrees, with US. The chapter
"Ultrasound and Fertility" is current
and relevant. A separate chapter covering
"Paediatric Gynaecological Ultrasound"
is a welcome addition not
typically seen in general US textbooks.
The text concludes with "Clinical Management
of Patients: The Gynaecologist's
Perspective." This section, written
by three clinicians, emphasizes
clinical applications, management,
and importance of the modern gynecologic
US evaluation.
This book is well organized and succinct,
and it flows remarkably well considering
the number of contributing authors.
Over 185 figures, most of which
consist of multiple high-quality US images
with relevant captions, supplement
the text. In addition, selected sections of
the text are summarized in "Key Points"
boxes.
The authors have clearly fulfilled
their goal of creating an updated, succinct,
and easy-to-read reference text.
This book would be of value to radiologists,
gynecologists, their respective
residents, and US technologists alike. I
highly recommend the second edition of
Practical Gynaecological Ultrasound.
