The third edition of Fundamentals of Anaesthesia is the gold standard text for the Primary FRCA, encapsulating the basic principles of modern anaesthesia in one easily accessible volume. Written and edited by a team of expert contributors with extensive FRCA examination experience, Fundamentals of Anaesthesia, Third Edition deliberately blends the expertise of invited authors in an unrivalled consistency of style more akin to that of a single author text. Deliberate use of authors with a more general anaesthesia background ties in well with the education of anaesthetists in their early years. The third edition is fully updated, with a number of completely new chapters. Presentation of information is clear and concise, with extensive use of tables, colour illustrations, summary boxes of key information and bullet lists. This Highly Commended award winning textbook is a unique revision aid for the Primary FRCA and an essential companion for all exam candidates.

Review
'There is no doubt that this textbook serves its purpose and is value for money. I read it for the Primary and also the Final FRCA examination and found it extremely helpful. Its improved format is pleasing to the eye. The book gives only the facts, avoiding the controversies of clinical anaesthesia. This prevents confusion for the candidate at a crucial time. … a welcome addition to all anaesthetic libraries for trainees preparing for examinations.' British Journal of Anaesthesia

SUPERB BOOK FOR PRIMARY FRCA
Fundamentals of anaesthesia is probably the only text book written for primary frca exam. Its very very useful in that it is written keeping the syllabus of royal college in mind.It covers widely all the chapters and is very useful for those selected for vivas. It covers all 3 parts of exam viz, physics, pharmacology and physiology. If one has the basic knowledge of all these subjects, then Fundamentals is enough to pass the exam! But, it is not so helpful for mcqs as it is for vivas!! Further, some chapters like action potential, valsalva and cardiac cycle which are the most frequent questions in vivas are poorly dealt with. The physics part needs another text book(Parbrook) to supplement it.
But, in nutshell, it is the most useful book for primary frca and I recommend it whole-heartedly!!Thanks to the authors!!
essential for the trainee and the trained anaesthetist
Pinnock et al have divided their book into the same four sections of the FRCA syllabus: Clinical anaesthetics, Physics & Measurement, Physiology, and Pharmacology. This structure makes it the ideal textbook for preparation for both the primary and final FRCA exams. (Although few candidates would be confident enough to use it alone.) Its comprehensive and detailed, yet readable content, also make it a very user friendly reference for teaching and revision in later practice.
simple and exam oriented
this book gives the basic ideas of anaesthesia in a simple way which is easy to remember especially useful for the junior staff. It is very much exam oriented which follows the topics for the theory and will help you for your primary as well as secondary.
