Average customer review:Product Description
The FRCA examination relies in part on a sound understanding of the basic sciences (physics, physiology, pharmacology and statistics) behind anaesthetic practice. It is important to be able to describe these principles clearly, particularly in the viva section of the examination. This book provides the reader with all the important graphs, definitions and equations which may be covered in the examination, together with clear and concise explanations of how to present them to the examiner and why they are important. Particular attention is paid to teaching the reader how to draw the graphs. This is an aspect of the examination which can be overlooked but which, if done well, can create a much better impression in the viva situation. Packed full of precise, clear diagrams with well structured explanations, and with all key definitions, derivations and statistics, this is an essential study aid for all FRCA examination candidates.

Review
'The book fills an important niche in the market… Who should buy it? I would recommend it to every basic trainee and every consultant who ever gets pestered for a viva.' Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
'In their book Physics, Pharmacology and Physiology for Anaesthetists, specialist registrars in anaesthetics Matthew Cross and Emma Plunkett provide key concepts, essential knowledge and the deductive reasoning you need to tackle the trickiest basic science questions. … With its manageable size and straightforward syntax, this book is an excellent reference point for virtually all relevant graphs, definitions and equations relating to the basic science of our speciality. … The book has been tuned for those studying for the primary Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists examination but is worthwhile reading for a far greater audience. Specialists in anaesthesia will find it a quick and easy to read guide to recapitulate the once-learnt but almost forgotten facts and principles depicted here as a concise compilation. The comprehensive guide provokes the lively impression that anaesthesia consists in large part of the practical application of physical, pharmacological and physiological principles and the book shall encourage us to translate this knowledge into our daily routine. Those who digest the contents of this book will be taught how to approach and explain the basic science they hitherto ignored or feared to be asked about.' Critical Care

A lifesaver!
I have been waiting for this book to come out for 6 mths! I am sitting my Final FRCA in the next 4 weeks and having been impressed by the drafts, the real thing reads very well and is even MORE IMPRESSIVE! I only recieved it 2 days ago but I can already say it has made life a lot easier and studying more focused to things that are important.
I wish I had a book like this during my Primary. I will definitely be recommending it to SHO/SpRs alike.
Two thumbs up to the authors - THANK YOU AND WELL DONE!
BRILLIANT!
This book does exactly what it says on the tin, it is an absolute God Send, it demonstrates clear concepts to answer what can be difficult and confusing topics. It is well laid & thought out and covers a lot of important concepts beautifully, with great diagrams. A must have for the Primary!
A great addition to the list of essential primary revision books
There are certain books that everyone reads for Primary- Parbrook, Pinnock and now Plunkett!
This is a great revision text containing all the essential definitions, concepts and diagrams you will need to know for Primary, particularly the MCQ exam. While it is not substantive enough to introduce you to a topic you are unfamiliar with, it is a great book to review a topic during a theatre case or a spare 5 mins.
It is well set out, and even explains the best way to set out graphs and diagrams with all the key points highlighted, which is a real bonus for the OSCE/Viva.
Small enough to carry around at work but yet it manages to cover all the main areas that crop up frequently in the exam.
A real bargain buy that I would have no hesitation in recommending to colleagues.
