Product Description

Critical introductions to a range of literary topics and genres. The Literature of Love is designed to introduce students to one of the central themes in literature. Focusing first on different types and aspects of love - physical, emotional, spiritual - it then offers a chronological coverage, aiming to illustrate ways in which attitudes to the representation of love in literature have evolved from Chaucer to the present time. Other sections of the book examine particular genres such as the love sonnet, the love letter and 'romantic' fiction; and the differing reception of this literature over time is also considered. The book includes extracts from and a discussion of, a range of authors, including Chaucer, Lady Mary Wroth, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy and Tony Kushner.

I bought this book for my daughter who is an a level student and hadn't expected to become so engrossed by it! The book contains an originality of thought and touches on the different aspects of love, in such a way that totally engages the reader.
The ideas are well supported by quotes from wide variety of literature, and we are introuduced to Aristophanes' fascinating idea of 2 people once being a'rotund being' and being chopped in half, hence the quest for our 'other half.'
The book is well set out, and organised and as well as being an enjoyable read is also (as it was intended!) a valuable and insightful guide for the study of love in English literature.
