Customer Reviews
A must-have textbook for A-Level Biology.
Like all the books in this excellent series, this is all you really need to get you through the module. If you're taking the Cambridge modular sciences syllabus then this is a must-have. If not, it's a good textbook covering most aspects of plant and human reproduction for A-Level Biology. There are photographs and diagrams, some of which are better than others. The text is comprehensive and easy to understand, so good you hardly need to make notes! Important words are in bold, and there are self-assessment questions throughout the text to help you review and enhance your knowledge (answers in the back). At the end of each chapter there is a bullet point summary (good for revision) and plenty of long-answer questions good for essay practice. Many sections have well-laid out numbered points which are easy to memorise and follow through. The tricky topics of hormonal control and gametogenesis are well covered and I think that I actually understand them now! This book has everything that you need - all you need do is learn it.
Provides a decent basis for the GDR exam.
In general, a good read. However, I felt that in parts it lacked the detail necessary to get all of the marking points in the mark schemes.
I also found that certain parts were difficult to understand and it was only after looking in another book that it made sense.
Throughout each chapter, there are about 2 pages of 'rambling,' which at times was frustrating having to sift through.
There are 'SAQ' questions dotted around each chapter, most of which are useful and aid understanding. There are a few though which I felt went into too much detail needed for the specification.
The vast majority of the diagrams are of excellent standard and really helped understanding. There are a few pictures which break up the text, making it easier to digest.
In summary, this is an essential book for the OCR specification.
