Editorial Reviews

Review
‘… a timely and important publication that should be an invaluable aid for applied psychologists, or anyone planning joint research with the NHS … any researcher or member of an ethics committee will find plenty of interest.’ The Psychologist

‘… the guidelines are narrowly drawn to provide help for specific types of research; from work on radiation, gene transfer, or the use of genetic information to research in developing countries or with participants who cannot give informed consent … the biggest challenge to the individual researcher is finding help to work through ethical issues, and the resource compiled by Eckstein and her colleagues is a useful place to start.’ The Lancet

‘Read it now, before your administrators do!‘ The Psychologist

Essential reading for ethics committees5
As a clinical researcher, my interaction with research ethics committees (RECs) is becoming ever more important. Having a good REC which can input into my clinical research is incredibly valuable, though the workload of having to jump the hurdle of REC approval is not exactly trivial. Equally, what defines a good REC is the understanding that they have, primarily, of the direct ethical aspects of clinical research, but also of the principles of research from the more biomedical point of view. This book has it all, plus key guidelines from a number of sources. It must, surely, be the classic reference point for RECs in the - currently rapidly changing – world of clinical research in all its manifestations. Some of what is there, for example, on the infrastructure and regulation of research, may change over the next few years with the new EU directive. However, for now, this is compulsory reading from cover to cover for every REC member in the country! However, given the size of the book, and the size of my REC applications, I guess this will take them a long time!
