Review of Rand McNally New International World Atlas
The Rand McNally New International World Atlas is a medium format World Atlas. Although the page size is smaller than the Times Atlas Comprehensive Edition and the National Geographic World Atlas, it makes up for this by having 287 map pages, and with an index of 177,000 place names, is only second in size to the Times Atlas.
The Rand McNally Atlas covers most of the World at either 1:6,000,000 or 1:3,000,000 with extreamely attractive and detailed physical maps which rival the 1:5,000,000 and 1:2,500,000 maps of the Times Atlas. Unlike the Times Atlas, it also has the best selection of 1:1,000,000 and 1,300,000 urban area maps that I know of. As would be expected from an American publisher, the maps of North and Central America are second to none, but the rest of the world is also very well mapped, apart from Siberia and Northern Canada (which get ignored in most Atlases).
Anyone looking for an alternative or complementary World Atlas to the Times Atlas Comprehensive Edition, especially if Urban mapping is important, need look no further than the Rand McNally New Universal World Atlas.
