Good for an Access course or foundation year at University
This books is an expensive looking, well illustrated American textbook. You might guess that from the title, as we don't do precalculus courses in this country.
With the exception of Calculus, it covers most of the material in the pure core at A-level and a number of topics contained in the further pure modules. There is a chapter at the end of the book called A preview of Calculus. The material here is very basic and just about covers that studied in the core C1 and C2 modules at AS level. If the Calculus had been more complete the book could be used on its own for study on an Access course or Foundation year at University.
Having said that, there are a number of colleges that offer a so-called level 3 course on an Access program (e.g. Croydon college), where nothing like this level is studied. Even the limited chapter on Calculus would be more than adequate for courses like this.
The style of the book is easy to follow. There are many worked examples and exercises to do. In the appendix you will find answers to odd numbered exercises. This allows the student to work on their own and check their own answers. It also allows for some of the questions to be set as an exercise/assignment to be marked by the teacher. Additionally there are practical applications, historical interludes and suggested essays.
