From the Back Cover
Past experience leads Tessa Brierley to suspect that her husband Nick is, once again, having an affair. Her first instinct, as always, is to confide in her best friend Maddy, but a chance remark over mid-morning coffee forestalls her as a new and more shocking suspicion dawns.
Set in the small village of Wychwood, Between Friends is an astutely witty novel of loyalties and betrayals.

Relaxing read
I loved this book. It tells the story of a woman who finds that her husband and her best friend are having an affair and how (because of her love for them both) she tries to keep her life together without losing either of them. I must admit that if I were in the same situation I certainly wouldn't be so tolerant! The storyline has an easy pace about it and involves the reader in the intricacies of village life and it's many quaint characters. It's very poignant without being over-sentimental and it gives the reader a sense of calm all the way through, even when the going begins to get tough. A wonderful book!
So much more than an "aga saga".
I happened on this book quite by accident when it was given away with a glossy magazine some years ago. Now you are probably thinking what I thought, that if they were giving it away then it cannot have been any good. Well how wrong I was. It came out at the time when "aga sagas" were popular and its original cover did little to dispel the idea that this was going to be some lightweight piece of chintzy fluff. At first it lay on the shelf until, desperate for something to read, I decided to give it a shot. Yes it is set around a village. Yes there are scenes in cosy kitchens. But this is a brilliant piece of work. Ms Rowntree skilfully unfolds a charming yet sophisticated and intelligent story that captivates you right from the off. The characters captivate you, their dilemmas, their prejudices, their anxieties, the way they interact with each other, all combine to ensnare your imagination. She never overcooks it, the whole thing is credible and natural. The whole experience is like slipping on an cosy cardigan and curling up in front of a fire with a supply of hot tea and choccie biccies. I have reread this book countless times and lent it to friends in the strict understanding that I will be asking for it back if they hold onto it for too long. After reading it most of my friends have bought their own copy. This book will leave you with a warm, satisfied feeling. Like chocolate but without the guilt.Try it!
