Forbidden Magic, Book 1 of the Godwars - Angus Wells5
What distinguishes this novel from other fantasy novels? It has the handsome hero (two of them actually; even better!), the beautiful heroine, the requisite romance, the exotic place names, the evil magicians (one of whom Wells characterises with warts and 'delves deep' into his nostril regularly), the quintessential quest...I'm not qutie sure how, but this book stands out. The characters are endearing and memorable, and the text highly readable. There aren't any boring descriptions to plough through, yet vivid images of the characters and the terrain travelled are impressed upon the reader as the story unfolds and the three protagonists Calandryll, Bracht and Katya encounter surprise after surprise. Perhaps it's the minute detail providing three dimensional characters, perhaps it's the constant flux of circumstance that render it so gripping - whatever it is, it is extremely enjoyable and I'm glad it's as long as it is - it could well be longer because one doesn't ever want the story to end. Books 2 and 3, Dark Magic and Wild Magic, are just as compelling. I highly recommend this trilogy.
