Customer Reviews
Love this book.
I have a 7 month old daughter and I have been amazed by how fast she learns and how fast she changes. I love this book because it sets out in a really clear way where we're heading next, so I can be ready (well, more ready). Each month I sit down and treat myself to reading the next chapter. I love it when I spot her doing something mentioned in the book and it's really helped me understand her frustrations when she can't sit / stand / grab / walk! The book isn't prescriptive or 'competitive' in any way and constantly stresses that kids don't all develop in the same way at the same time, but it's great to have some idea what 'normal' is and to see what great things lie just around the corner! I am going to buy it for every pregnant friend from now on.
Hopeless
I bought this based upon the other reviews, and have been totally disappointed.
The book is about 15 years out of date, and recommends you do things that all others will tell you is wrong. For example, it actually says it is fine to put the baby to sleep, face down with its head pressed against the head board. All other advice will say that the baby should be on its back at the bottom of the cot.
The book is also badly written, boring to read, almost depressing.
Well past its sell by date, do not bother to buy this.
We also bought Contented Little Baby, and the Pregnancy Bible. These are both fantastic and highly recommeded.
DON'T HAVE A BABY WITHOUT IT!
I have three children of my own and also raised my little sister. This makes four. The first two are quite a bit older than the last - and I've used the Caplan's series of books over and over. I don't profess to be an "expert" - but I do write a nationally syndicated parenting column called Parent to Parent. My name is Jodie Lynn and at least I do know a little about kids. While no book can tell you exactly how to perceive your children's developmental stages - this one is pretty darn close. I tell all my parents in my parenting classes (and have for years) to make this book - and the others in the Caplan's series - - very much part of their home library. If I could get all parents to read thesse books - our society would be a much better place. This is how strongly I feel about people learning about their children's developmental stages. ALL PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS need to know what it is each child can do at various stages in order to set up realistic and acceptable guidelines for that individual child. RUN - DON'T WALK - to get this book. Healthy Parenting!
