About the Author
Frank Clarke is a self-taught artist who realised that most art instruction books or classes for the beginner offered no help with the basics of painting a picture. He developed his ‘Have Some More fun’ teaching technique to help artists get started, and the success of his teaching methods led to the publication, in Ireland, of four books and the making of over 200 television programmes, transmitted on television stations worldwide. BBC Books published Frank Clarke’s Paintbox in 1998 – a bestseller with over 65,000 copies sold. He has produced his own teaching videos and created his own painting materials and equipment company, Simply Painting. He believes, and has proved, that anyone can paint… and that art is for everyone.

“I am not a trained artist and, being self-taught, I understand the problems you might find yourself experiencing when you start your painting journey. To be Frank (excuse the pun), I had terrible trouble learning to paint. My greatest problem was when I told anyone I was trying to paint. They would usually say something like ‘aren’t you lucky to have the gift… I only wish I could draw a straight line’. It dawned on me that everyone was assuming that in order to paint I had to have some kind of gift or talent to begin with. My first efforts proved I didn’t! What I did have, though, was a desire to paint and, luckily, a stubborn nature. When someone tells me I can’t do something, I say ‘why?’. Now I am not suggesting we can all run a four-minute mile just because we are determined, and neither am I suggesting that if we paint we’ll all turn into Michelangelos. However, what I do know is that everyone can learn to paint if they want to, and that with some simple! instructions to jump-start you – and that’s what this book is all about – and some practise, you can become as good as you want.”
