Three fine historical adventures
These three 60s Doctor Who stories haven been lovingly restored fromoff-air recordings made by fans on original broadcast and are the onlyremaining record of the productions.
The Myth Makers is highly witty and is very easy to listen to. TheMassacre is dramatic and suspenceful, and it is best to concentrate onthis one to get the most out of it. William Hartnell is brilliant in hisdual role of The Doctor and the Abbot of Amboise. This is very much like aradio play, and is ideally suited to the audio-only format. TheHighlanders is a great adventure. A story often forgotten about by fans,it turns out to be hugely enjoyable to listen to because it is so muchfun.
These two Hartnell and one Troughton stories have been put into a nice boxat a good price, and is an excellent way to get three of the best DoctorWho audios in one go. The three stories are very different from oneanother, so the box set caters to many tastes. Very highly recommended.
Quality
If you're looking to start a collection of missing Who or if you don't yet have any of these stories then you won't regret buying this fine collection of historicals.
The Hartnell historicals are among the greatest of all Who serials and the Massacre is arguably the greatest of those. It's impossible to fault, with both the acting and writing coming straight from the top drawer. This isn't just great Who, it's great drama full-stop and it's sad to think that it was one of the last of its kind. Doctor Who would never again be this serious or grown-up.
The Myth Makers takes a less serious (and a far less historically accurate) approach to its subject but also benefits from good writing and accomplished performances. I was particularly taken with Frances White as the permanently angry but frequently-mocked Cassandra. The character is devoid of humour and yet that's exactly what makes her funny. Despite its humour the Myth Makers isn't the Carry On Doctor Who that it's frequently painted as. Amongst all the fun are some surprisingly effective dramatic scenes, particularly in the final episode.
The Highlanders is a sad milestone in Who history being the last proper historical. Doomed by their relative unpopularity with viewers they would make way for more monsters and spaceships. A great pity IMO, especially when you consider that they've withstood the test of time far better than most of their science fiction counterparts.
In terms of quality this is a tremendous collection (and nicely packaged as well). If you don't have any of these stories then buy this collection today.
Great Value Who!
Never before has commuting to work been so enjoyable, on my way to the office I now get to listen to one episode of Dr Who - I have very nearly completed the whole of the 1st doctors adventures this way.
But when you're buying each story individually it can work out quite costly... however, this box set provides you with 3 stories for the price of one, so its very good value.
The Myth Makers is a particuarly good story - set in the trojan war and has been one of my favourites; the Massacre is a good story, but be prepared it is some what sad... and I am yet to listen to the Highlanders yet (as I'm listening to the stories in order and I'm still on the Gun Fighters)
But enjoy - its well worth it!!!
