Ideal for those who haven't done French since leaving school5
I haven't done any French since leaving school 18 years ago and needed something that was going to give me a good basic introduction. The book and cassettes take the listener through the steps of saying hello and goodbye, talking about yourself, asking directions, shopping, eating and other useful situations that the English tourist might find themselves in. There are sections in the book that test to see how much you have learnt and sections that encourage the listener to speak French as part of taped conversations. After looking at various other teach yourself packages, I think I made the right choice with this and would not hesitate to recommend it to other people. After only 3 weeks of listening to the tapes in the car on the way to work, I feel much more confident of speaking the language when I go on holiday. If you are looking for a package to get you started in talking French, this is it.

An excellent introduction to French language for tourists4
This handy pack is just what you need to start your study of French, especially designed for those with no knowledge of the language, but also ideal for those whose school French is rusty and who are planning a holiday in the near future. The cassettes lead the learner clearly through the material in the book, and the whole course is very suitable for self-study. At the end of the course, you should be able to make your way through typical tourist situations like shopping, finding your way around, eating out, etc, as well as starting simple conversations with some of the people you may meet during your stay. It's not a long course, and won't take you into any complicated language, but because of this the learner is likely to get to the end with confidence, and not give up halfway, which is a common feature of early language learning. Everybody on the cassette sounds 'real' and the whole package is attractively presented and at a very reasonable price. Plenty of encouragement to counteract that English stereotype: the reluctant language-learner!

So easy, Micky Mouse could do it ...5
After a long day at the office any "learning experience" needs to be: relaxed (non-stuffy) easy to follow (tired brain), in short bursts (before the pub shuts), with clear and simple guidance (for the easily confused / complete beginner).

This book and the accompanying tapes really fulfill these criteria for me with helpful, constructive and useful instruction.
