Life affirming stuff
Read these on snatched breaks from a little light-deprived office so all the more luminous for the context. It's a simplistic philosophy Cummings has (flowers, pretty girls and life= good, machines, academia and death = bad) but none the worse for it. All that stumbling syntax is worth it I promise- it makes everything fresh somehow. We live in a world in which we must battle against cynicism, apathy and horrible fluorescent lighting: arm yourself with some Cummings I say.
Buy for the first 20 poems
The first 20 or so poems (from cummings' first collections) are the best. After that, cummings tends to repeat himself, & the style degenerates into formulaic whimsy. His account of his experiences as a 1st World War POW ("The Enormous Room") is also worth reading.
