Product Description

A reprinted selection of the earliest work of Ted Hughes and Thom Gunn which should be valuable as a historical document. It shows certain shared features and also serves to demonstrate, with the benefit of hindsight, how distinct these two talents were from the outset.

A book full of unque images of the whole world.4
I have been studying this book for A-level English Literature and although I will admit that I would not have picked this book off the shelf of my own accord, it is a good anthology. The book contains a wide selection of poems by each poet, trying the display all the different qualities and techniques of the poets. Although they are from the same era of poetry, the focus of their poetry is different. Ted Hughes focuses on the natural world, which he sees repaetedly in violent images. It is clear from the onset that he admires the instinctive quality in nature, which he considers most of humanity to have lost. However, within humanity he has selected a few individuals he considers to hold these vital qualities, the most notable is the 'The martyrdom of Bishop Farrar' (not a poem for the fain hearted). This same admiration, that Hughes feels for nature, Gunn feels for people of action, people who show conviction. His admiration is not so much for individual and freuqently he sees the advantages of uniformity (see 'On the Move'). The same qualties of action, conviction and instinct come up throughtout this selection. Showing a stark contrast in their poetry. I have read and analyised these poems several times and I am still not bored. These two very successful poets are shown here in their best light as they draw the reader into their world. Leaving you evetuall with an appreciation of it, whether or not you agree with it.
