Published to coincide with the centenary of his birth, this is an examination of the personal concerns which Howard Hawks brought to his films, and which enabled him to stamp his distinctive signature on what once appeared to be a random assortment of genre pieces. Hawks's discussion of his working methods in this frequently irreverent book represents a master class in the practical art of film direction.

A Riveting Read for Film Fans...............
After discovering the films of Howard Hawks recently, I decided to buy 'Hawks on Hawks' By Joseph McBride. It is just as good as his biography of Frank Capra,'A Catastrophe of Success'.
The author can't hide his admiration for the director, (his films included such classics as 'Only Angels Have Wings', 'The Big Sleep') and the amount of information contained in this book is remarkable.
The methods, thoughts and ideas of the great man are portrayed superbly in this book and I would recommend it to Hawks fans or anyone who is interested in film.
