Cinderella at it's darkest
This is a story about a girl who is so afraid that the only place she feels safe is hidden under the ashes. It is also about a Mother that is so proud that she will do anything to satisfy her greed, even make her daughters suffer in pain. Finally, it is about two daughters that are so cruel that the loss of a heel and a shoe seem adept as punishment.
If you think this is just another fairytale version of Cinderella, think again. Although it does follow the same plot, Wertenbaker introduces themes like anorexia and incest to revamp it and to give it some relevence to our modern society.
This is a story for anyone who has been let down so badly that they felt that they would never be happy again. It is also for those can understand what it is like to be hurt so badly that they became afraid of happiness. Despite all this negativity, 'The Ash Girl' is above all a story about hope because as cliched and corny as it sounds, dreams really do come true.
