From the Back Cover
Now fully updated, Scorsese on Scorsese is the definitive study of America’s foremost film director, including new chapters on Kundun, Bringing Out the Dead, the documentary My Voyage to Italy, and the epic Gangs of New York.
True to its title, this book offers Martin Scorsese in his own words: through a career-length interview in which he recalls his upbringing in New York’s Little Italy, and explains the inspiration and creation of his many great movies, from Mean Streets and Taxi Driver, through Raging Bull and The Last Temptation of Christ, up to Goodfellas, Casino, and Gangs of New York. The result is an incomparable insight into a body of work that is the most personal achievement in modern American cinema.
Scorsese proves himself to be a terrifically articulate artist, whether recounting the many battles to get his movies made, his supreme passion for the medium of film itself, or the roots of his long-time creative partnership with actor Robert De Niro.
Scorsese on Scorsese also contains a complete filmography, and a wealth of behind-the-scenes stills and sketches from Scorsese’s own collection.
Customer Reviews
Scorsese on Scorsese - a review
This is a superb book about Martin Scorsese and is based around three lectures that he did for the NFT (national film theatre). As well as Scorsese giving you a full and detailed account of his film career to date (casino is the last entry) the book is packed with black & white photos from his films and also story boards, sketches, letters and much more.He gives lots of details and interesting insights into his movies, methods, acting producing directing etc which seem to get missed from a lot of the magazine articles that come around whenever he has a new film on release.
As always, Scorsese tells his story with the passion and interst that have made him one of the best known movie directors of all time and this book is pretty much top of the heap when it comes to Scorsese books.
I read this book in two sittings and found it,like the woody Allen book of similar title,a riveting read.
Scorsese guides you through his life and american cinema
I thought this was a very good book, an essential for any scorsese or film buff. It's hard to take your eye's off it once you start you become entranced.
