Product Description

He has compiled a wide range of material which gives equal emphasis to the study and context of Pinter's writing and the experiences of the theatre practitioners who bring his plays to the stage. Pinter's own responses to his artistic output are gathered, from his first interview in 1959 to the latest interview carried out especially for this book in 2004. From amongst Pinter's collaborators, Clive Donner, Lindsay Duncan, Gari Jones, Peter Hall, David Leveaux, Joseph Losey, Tom Rand and Lia Williams all offer reflection on his work as a writer, actor and director. This stimulating collection of interviews provides a complete guide to Pinter, his work for stage and screen, and his political outlook.

Editorial Reviews

Review
"'The strong point of the books in this series is the distinctive voices of the writers, their attitudes and how these are reflected in their plays. Smart chronologies and brief annotated bibliographies give the books a student - friendly feel, and all four are readable and jargon free.' Aleks Sierz, Times Higher Education Supplement"

From the Author
I'm delighted that Harold Pinter has been awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize for Literature. He is very deserving of it indeed. My book, I hope, goes some way to clarifying why his reputation is of such mettle. In it, I attempt to summarise his artistic objectives and achievements, and provide a compilation from over 30 interviews with him and with numerous of his collaborators (including many new ones I conducted) which collectively illustrate his lifetime's work and, I hope, underpin why he is such a significant author. Readers looking for further material on Pinter could do worse than also check out other recent publications on Pinter such as Ian Smith's book, the Cambridge Companion to Pinter, Steven Gale's writings on his film work and, if I may, my previous book on the subject.
