About the Author
Seamus Heaney was born in County Derry in Northern Ireland. Death of a Naturalist, his first collection, appeared in 1966, and since then he has published poetry, criticism and translations which have established him as one of the leading poets of his generation. He has twice won the Whitbread Book of the Year, for The Spirit Level (1996) and Beowulf (1999). In 1995 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. District and Circle, his eleventh collection of poems, was published in 2006 and was awarded the T. S. Eliot Prize.

Years of Joy
There is an awful lot here and you are not going to get through it in many months, 2-5 poems at a time max 2 times a day is enough. Heaney is a towering figure and is to be highly commended in producing such a record of his work. I have early recordings from the radio of some of these poems and some have a certain youthful zest that these versions lack but I have no regrets. A tremendous boxed set.
He can read and write!
So many poets are such poor performers of their work that one may approach this hefty set with understandable apprehension. But Heaney is the exception that proves the rule: he reads his poems as brilliantly as he writes them--which is to say very well indeed and with just the right emotion and nuance. It's as if he wrote them himself!
