clear plain english, easy to understand and use3
This book is a very useful tool that explains in detail the basic soil fundamentals. A very good book for all civil engineering students and far better than some of the other books around. The CD-ROM and associated spreadsheets, assignments and quizzes all add to the learning curve and make the understanding of the whole subject easier.

It Rocks!!!5
As a student civil engineer, I have used this for all my second year studies in Geotechnics and found the shear strength of the text enormously useful. It contains worked examples and excellent descriptions. I bought the 1990 version and my friend the most recent. When compared we found the only difference to be the contents page was much more in-depth in the newer version. So far. Additionally the book is well compacted and is infact handbag size (9in*5in).

A great reference for all civil students.

Basic Soil Mechanics4
Every textbook has its particular strength. I have done my study and can tell, lots of the author's effort went into covering the critical state framework and some very basic fundamental concepts which have come to form the corner stone of Soil Mechanics. It is a huge resource for students and a practical guide for practising geotechnical engineers. The accompanying CD adds to its credibility as an invaluable (self-explanatory) material.
