Customer Reviews

A disappointing companion2
These notes are, in short, fairly vague and very disappointing. If you already have a basic copy of Book I & II then you may consider buying this, if your copy had no footnotes whatsoever. Personally I found the Norton's edition of the entire Paradise Lost, provided superior notes, which were attached to the book (in footnote format)which makes for much easier reading and comprehension and unlike the York notes, which will commonly give the definition of words which seem unfamiliar or out of context, the Norton edition elaborates upon Milton's initial points reinforcing what was said, often in better terms. Overall these notes are not worth the price that is demanded for them!

For A-Level5
Brilliant for A-Level study & revision. The very concise and well written summaries of the historical, literary and critical context of the epic being especially useful. Strongly recommend for anyone who will be sitting an exam on the poem.

Very useful for A-Level study4
As far as York Notes Study Guides go, this is a pretty handy and reliably informed piece of Enlgish-Lit guidance.

It's aimed at A-Level students of English-Lit, which is what I was when I used it, and I would recommend it to anyone doing the same.

The purpose it serves, it to help the student catagorise and compartmentalise the themes/motifs/literary allusions of the text in an academic and organised way. It won't teach you anything new, or anything that you haven't got from your own reading of Milton, but it will help you clarify and organise your thoughts.

It's very useful for revision too.

Recommended.
