"All the books are well written, straightforward and clear. The authors understand key skills...their approach to external tests is extremely sensible."
Customer Reviews
OK for 'A' level candidates, but not for Modern Apprentices!
As a key skills tutor, I bought the set of Longman Books as a much needed resource for my candidates; after all, they were one of the first on the market.
Had I taught at a Further Education College, I would have found them invaluable, as over fifty percent of the books are dedicated to mapping evidence from 'A' levels.
However, the author appears not to realise that a large proportion of candidates undertaking key skills are from the work-based route, ie. Modern Apprentices. This immediately makes over fifty percent of the book(s) defunct for these candidates. These candidates would have benefitted from a section on evidence collection from various work roles, or reference to NVQs, but there is none.
If you are considering this book for some indepth skills training, such as how to construct a formal report or other extended document, this is barely touched upon. There are no practice exercises, nor are there sample questions from past external test papers. Candidates who first used this book still required plenty of guidance from experienced tutors in order to prepare both their portfolios of evidence and for the external tests.
A useful grounding for the portfolio part of the Key Skill
The previous review seems to refer to the level 3 book. This book is strongest when it sets out and explains the portfolio requirements and gives help and ideas about building evidence. The last section about where to look for opportunities in various courses (GCSE and vocational) is very useful and makes it a good book for institutions to have and share.
