From the Back Cover
Criminal Law adopts a unique approach to the teaching of the subject. Difficult, abstract concepts, such as intention and recklessness, are made easier to understand by first introducing and discussing them in the context of specific crimes. This allows students to progress with confidence to a sound understanding of the general principles of criminal law. Throughout the book judgments and the scope of individual offences are evaluated, and reform options are discussed, including proposals from Law Commission Consultation Papers and Reports. Cases from the US and Commonwealth jurisdictions are considered where helpful to analysis.
The book is divided into three parts-
· Part 1 deals with preliminary matters, including a general introduction to criminal law and an illustration of common law and statutory offences, using the specific crimes of murder and criminal damage.

· Part 3 examines particular offences in detail, including theft and offences against the person.
Key features of the fifth edition include discussion of the following-
· Coverage of the effect of the enforcement of the Human Rights Act 1998, particularly in the areas of insanity and burden of proof
· Discussion of the House of Lords' decision in the case of Morgan Smith in the area of provocation
· Coverage of B v DPP in the area of unfitness to plead

Customer Reviews

Jefferson strikes again5
Once again Mr Jefferson of the acclaimed law department within the University of Sheffield has produced a work of unsurpassable quality. Rarely has a book of such accessibility and depth of reasoning been available to undergraduates. Jefferson uses his inimitable writing style to maximum effect, sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking but always lightning quick and razor sharp. Readers will feel priviledged to have read this book. I keep mine under the pillow.
