About the Author
Born in London, Len Deighton served in the RAF before graduating from the Royal College of Art (which recently elected him a Senior Fellow). While in New York City working as a magazine illustrator he began writing his first novel, The Ipcress File, which was published in 1962. He is now the author of more than thirty books of fiction and non-fiction. At present living in Europe, he has, over the years, lived with his family in ten different countries from Austria to Portugal.

Inspiring account of the European air war
I'm an avid reader of books about the European air war of World War II. However I must admit that I've never had much interest in wholly American accounts due to the fact that they usually pretend that no other nation participated. This book is no different in that respect however I couldn't put it down. It didn't portray the characters as supermen but as ordinary people with ordinary hopes and dreams. It was a truely excellent read and has inspired me to research more the American side of the battle. Well worth a purchase.

Cracking war yarn
Deighton does an excellent job of setting the scene of the passions, contradictions, fears and excitement of American fighter pilots taking the war to the Germans from bases in the UK. Excellent flying action and an excellent plot based on the lives and loves of the US pilots and the UK villagers

One of the few books I can read again and again...
Mr. deighton has - with this great and moving novel - done it again. The differences between the locals and the flyboys, the stolen love and the terror of war...it all comes out. And what a plot!
I only wish, that Spielberg would read it too and make it into a movie. It's right there, waiting.
Read it, before he does!
