darkly complex and gripping
This is the kind of book that seems to be designed to be read when you have lots and lots of time on your hands, beceause believe me, you'll need it! For the first 300 pages or so, several stories seem to run together in parallel tandem, seemingly completely divergent from each other. Yet as the reader continues, and we learn more and more about the histories of the various characters, the plots become intertwined. The interesting thing in the book is, like many of his works, the complex characters, half of whom never meet each other, yet all of whom affect the course of each others lives. The plot of this book is very complicated , possibly too much so, but it is still a highly entertaining work, examining the influence of power and wealth, both on society itself and those who inhabit it it, especially those at the "top". There are several important issues within the book itself, which challenges our views of things, especially on life and death and our fear of the inevitable swipe of the grim reaper's scythe. I obviously won't tell you what happens at the end, but all I will say is that it is highly ironic, and the old addage of becareful what you wish for is truly, and in my view poetically, realised. Enjoy the book, I did.
Eric Lustbader's most imaginative work to date.
As an avid fan of Eric Lustbader's work, having read 11 of his novels, I can safely say that this is by far and away his most innovative and daring novel.
Although not his greatest novel (The Miko and White Ninja have yet to be surpassed) Black Blade rides on a fast paced plot involving a sinister cabal bent on economical control of the globe, whilst pursuing the quest for immortality.
Beginning with a series of bizarre murders performed by one of Lustbader's most unsettling villains yet, the hero Wolf becomes involved in pursuit of an antagonist capable of causing people to burn from within. The chase leads through the US and eventually to Japan. Meanwhile a business/political scheme is underway focused upon a new age of protectionism, crafted in a way only Mr Lustbader could create.
Black Blade has some truly thrilling scenes, including a very surreal fight against a computer generated oracle. Whilst not as believeable as simpler thrillers such as Zero or The Ninja, Black Blade provides an excellent sense of escapism that really has to be experienced.
Mr Lustbader has truly let his imagination run wild and provided a thriller of the first order that is truly unique and in a league of its own. Lose yourself in one of the most gritty and spellbinding thrillers ever assembled in modern fiction.
