Adult support activities to try.
This book contains lots of short activities to do with groups of children, many activities would lend themselves to whole class work. The activities look at skills such as word beginning/ ending, long and short vowels and syllables.
Many of the activites are oral and use very little equipment (the odd puppet or dice) and there are lots of ideas for developing phonic work.
The book contains masters for a few worksheets and games and some very nice picture cards which could be incorporated into other workcards.
Whild I think the book is great value and has a lot of ideas it is very dependent on adults working with the children at all times. It would be nice to move onto work children could do in small groups by themselves.
A wonderful book to help k-2 teachers introduce phonemics
Scholastics and Wiley Blevins have created a wonderful book that clearly explains the what's and why's of phonemic awareness. After Blevins convinces you that this will lead to reading success, especially for the 20% of students that struggle, he uses the buld of this book to present ready-to-use lesson plans. Also included is a professional bibliography and lists of books that you librarian can provide you for a literacy-based phonemic awareness program. The reseach shows that this is a critical process for problem readers, that reading is not a natural process, that phonics instruction without phonemics of little use. A great, inexpensive book that will have a very measureable effect on our students. Also great for home-schoolers and parents- or anyone tired of the endless phonics vs. whole langu age debate.
Disappointing
I bought this to try and help my daughter to read, as although old enough she is definately struggling to grasp the concept of phonics. However I soon read in the books intro that it is aimed at helping children to learn sounds of words, not necesarily to read them. Nevertheless, I had bought the book by this stage so I decided I would see if there was anything I could adapt, or possibly use with my younger child (almost 3). I found nothing. I found the activities repetitive, (i.e. the same task basically given a different name)and the style boring. It is definately aimed at groups of children not homeschoolers as the earlier reviewer said, as the only time I could see a child being interested was in some of the tasks that called for the children to shout out words or letters, or make some other noise/action when they hear them. This thing I think works best with groups as they excite each other.
So this one I will chalk up to experience and the 'downside' of buying books blind on the internet, without opening and seeing inside first.
