The best account of America's bloodiest day
Stephen Sears is one of the best regular writers about campaigns of the American Civil War, and this - one of his earlier works - set the standard that he and others have followed. It remains by far the detailed best treatment of this crucial battle (surpassing even James McPherson's recent and very good, but shallow "Antietam: Crosroads of Freedom"). Antietam probably was the real turning point of the war (o.k., not everyone thinks that but Britain wasn't going to intervene for the South after emancipation, and Antietam gave Lincoln the opportunity he sought for the Proclamation); this book is in many ways a turning point of the literature. Get it.
